SMPTE ST 2110 over WAN
As ST 2110 took off for use in studio facilities there was an emerging requirement to long-haul these IP flows over Wide Area Networks. In doing this, there were issues that arise that were not present in the Studio/Campus environments that needed to be addressed in a common manner to allow seamless operation of multi-campus environments.
These include (but are not limited to) the following: Flow protection, Flow trunking, Essence alignment, Low latency handling, Format conversion, Compression, Protection of other data flows, Security, PTP trunking, Wan timing & associated control (NMOS) filtering and border proxying. The project kick-off formally in the fall of 2018 and resulted in two Technical Recommendations being approved by the VSF Board on November 17, 2022:
VSF TR-09-1 ST2110 WAN Data Plane defines a method of media flows and related control plane information being shared securely and robustly over Wide Area connectivity. It is formed in two parts – a data plane section defining media flow transport and a control plane section defining the communications. TR-09-1 defines the data plane.
VSF TR-09-2 ST2110 WAN Control Plane defines a method of media flows and related control plane information being shared securely and robustly over Wide Area connectivity. It is formed in two parts – a data plane section defining media flow transport and a control plane section defining the communications. TR-09-2 defines the control plane.
